JEE Main 2019 Marks vs Rank vs Percentile

After taking the JEE Main exam, many students are curious about how their marks relate to their percentile score and rank. Let's break it down in a way that's easier for you to understand.

The JEE Main exam uses a process called normalization to calculate the percentile score and rank of each student. This process takes into account factors like the difficulty level of the exam and how other students performed.

The percentile score represents the percentage of students who scored equal to or lower than a particular student's score. For example, if a student gets a percentile score of 90, it means they performed better than 90% of the students who took the exam.

To estimate the rank corresponding to a specific percentile, you can refer to the previous year's data provided by the National Testing Agency (NTA) or the official JEE Main website. This data gives an idea of the rank range for different percentiles. Keep in mind that the actual rank can vary based on the number of students and their performance in your exam session.

It's important to note that the JEE Main percentile determines your eligibility for the JEE Advanced exam. The top 2.5 lakh candidates (including all categories) based on their JEE Main percentile are eligible to appear for the JEE Advanced, which is a gateway to prestigious institutes like the IITs.

To get accurate and official information about your rank based on your percentile, you should wait for the official results and rank announcements by the NTA. They will provide you with the most reliable and up-to-date information about your rank and eligibility for further stages of the admission process.

Remember, your percentile score and rank are important for getting into the college of your choice, so it's worth paying attention to this information.

JEE Main Percentile vs Ranks

The rank corresponding to a particular percentile in JEE Main can vary each year based on the performance of students and the number of candidates appearing for the exam. The percentile score is calculated by comparing your marks with the marks of other students who took the exam.

To estimate your rank based on the percentile, you can refer to the previous year's data or consult the official JEE Main website for the current year's data. They provide information on the rank range corresponding to different percentiles. Keep in mind that the actual rank may differ from the previous year's trend, as it depends on the specific performance of the students in your year's exam.

It's important to wait for the official results and rank announcements by the National Testing Agency (NTA) for accurate and up-to-date information about your rank. They will provide you with the official rank corresponding to your percentile score.

Remember, the rank you achieve based on your percentile will play a crucial role in the college admission process. So, it's important to keep an eye on the official announcements and plan your next steps accordingly.

JEE Main Normalisation Process: How Rank is calculated from percentile

Certainly! Understanding why JEE Main normalization is incorporated is crucial. Normalization helps to equalize the difficulty level of the exam conducted in multiple sessions on different dates. The JEE Main percentile score obtained by a candidate is determined only after applying normalization to the raw marks.

The JEE Main percentile scores indicate the percentage of candidates who have scored equal to or below a particular percentile in the examination. The percentile score is measured on a scale of 100 to 0 for each session of examinees.

To calculate the percentile scores, the National Testing Agency (NTA) applies a normalization formula to the raw marks obtained by a candidate in each subject (Maths, Physics, and Chemistry), as well as the total marks. Ideally, the highest score in each session receives a percentile of 100.

The percentile scores obtained through normalization are used to prepare the JEE Main merit list. To avoid ties among candidates with the same scores, the percentile scores are calculated up to seven decimal places.

By incorporating normalization, JEE Main ensures fairness in evaluating the performance of candidates across different sessions. It takes into account the variations in difficulty level and maintains a uniform standard for ranking the candidates based on their percentile scores.

Understanding the normalization process is important as it provides a fair and equitable evaluation of candidates' performances in the JEE Main examination..

JEE Main Normalisation Process: Tie Breaker Guidelines

The following comes into effect when two or more candidates obtain equal percentile scores. The inter-se-merit will be determined according to the following rules in case of a tie.

  • Candidates obtaining higher Percentile Score in Mathematics will be ranked higher
  • If a tie still exists, the candidate with higher Percentile Score in Physics will be given the higher rank
  • If a tie still exists, the candidate obtaining higher Percentile Score in Chemistry will get the higher rank
  • If a tie still exists, candidate older in age will be given preference
The JEE Main 2020 result will be released separately for the January and April sessions on January 31 and April 30 respectively. The best score of the two sessions will be taken into consideration for candidates who appeared in both the sessions. The merit list will be prepared on the final scores and ranks announced based on the same.
