IIT-JEE Preparation : How to Get Started on Your Journey
IIT-JEE Preparation |
Preparing for IIT-JEE is not as easy as one might think. It requires a great deal of hard work and dedication. Unlike in 10th grade, where you could memorize and pass exams with good grades, IIT-JEE preparation demands a deep understanding of the underlying concepts. Simply cramming the night before won't be sufficient. You must study consistently, complete your homework regularly, and internalize the concepts to the point where you can recall them effortlessly, even in your sleep.
To embark on your IIT-JEE preparation journey, you need to choose a reliable coaching institute. These institutes provide a competitive environment that helps develop your skills, and interacting with fellow students exposes you to new concepts. I have already posted about the best coaching institutes in Kota, which you can find in my blog post.
Once you join a coaching institute, you will be assigned to study batches that periodically shuffle students based on their cumulative ranks. Qualified teachers will be assigned to teach their respective specialized subjects. To excel in your studies, consider the following tips:
- Attend classes regularly and be attentive.
- Take thorough notes during lectures and review them regularly.
- Complete assignments and homework promptly.
- Seek clarification from teachers whenever you have doubts.
- Practice solving a variety of problems to strengthen your understanding.
- Create a study schedule and stick to it consistently.
- Stay focused and minimize distractions.
- Form study groups with classmates for collaborative learning.
- Stay motivated and maintain a positive mindset throughout the preparation journey.
- Regularly evaluate your progress and make adjustments to your study approach as needed.
Remember, success in IIT-JEE preparation requires consistent effort, discipline, and perseverance.
- Actively listen to each and every point explained by the teacher: Paying close attention during classroom sessions is crucial. By listening carefully, you can store the concepts in your brain more effectively, eliminating the need for extra effort during revision. This approach saves you time and energy.
- Create well-organized and comprehensive notes: Your notes are your study material for the next two years. Ensure that your notes are structured in a way that revisiting them after two years triggers a flashback of the entire class in your mind. Don't overlook even the smallest details, as JEE papers often include straightforward questions.
- Cultivate a supportive circle of friends: Your circle of friends at the coaching institute and hostel plays a significant role. It is important to have peers who selflessly help you and contribute to your learning by sharing new concepts and strategies instead of fostering unhealthy competition.
- Engage in daily revision: After each class, make it a habit to revise the topics covered. This helps solidify the concepts in your mind, reducing the need to constantly refer back to your notes while solving homework questions. Regular revision saves time and ensures a relaxed state of mind before coaching tests.
- Prioritize completing homework: Solve your daily homework on the same day it is assigned. Delaying it will only lead to a backlog that hinders your ability to clarify doubts during homework discussions in class. Make your homework and revision your top priorities. Effective revision makes homework easier, and remember that a backlog is a major reason for failure in JEE.
- Take advantage of periodic tests: Coaching institutes conduct regular tests to provide you with an authentic JEE experience. These tests feature questions that are often more challenging than the ones provided in your study materials, aiming to enhance your problem-solving skills. Many questions are conceptual and require trickier approaches, but they can be solved using the knowledge acquired in the classroom. Treat tests as opportunities for self-assessment, learning from mistakes, and avoiding their repetition in the future.
Best Books For IIT-JEE Preparation:-
PHYSICS:
1. I.E Irodov(Not recommended for JEE Main )
This book is highly recommended for JEE Advanced students, rather than JEE Main students, as it contains questions that demand a high level of critical thinking, a deep understanding of concepts, and the ability to link various concepts together. These factors make it one of the toughest and best books for IIT-JEE preparation.
It's important to note that this book primarily consists of questions and has minimal theory content. It is not necessary to solve every single problem in the book, as some problems may go beyond the scope of the IIT-JEE exam. To assist students, my coaching institute, VIBRANT ACADEMY, provided a curated list of problems from the book that are deemed important from the perspective of the IIT-JEE examination.
2. H.C Verma & University of physics:
Both books, University Physics and HCV (Concepts of Physics by H.C. Verma), provide a combination of theory and questions. The theoretical content in both books is of the same level and is sufficient for JEE Main and Advanced preparation. These books help students develop a strong understanding of the topics, which is crucial for solving physics problems effectively.3. Cengage B.M. Sharma
Another recommended book is "Cengage B.M. Sharma." These books are specifically designed to cover JEE Main and Advanced topics. They are ideal for students who prefer self-study. These books offer a good amount of theory explained in an easily understandable manner.
In particular, the Heat and Thermodynamics section in Cengage B.M. Sharma requires a strong theoretical foundation. It is highly recommended for gaining in-depth knowledge in this area. The book serves as an invaluable resource for high-quality problems and is a must-have for serious self-study students. It aids in clearing all the concepts taught in coaching. Even students attending coaching can benefit from it as additional practice material. Overall, it is highly recommended for self-study students aiming to crack JEE (Advanced), as it offers a wealth of well-constructed problems and comprehensive theory explanations.
MATHEMATICS:
1.Black Book:
These books consist of tricky and highly conceptual problems, particularly suitable for JEE Advanced. One of these books is written by Vikas Gupta sir, the Director of VIBRANT Academy and an IIT Guwahati graduate, along with Pankaj Joshi sir, another Director of Vibrant Academy.
2. Cengage series:
Another recommended series is the Cengage series, which is valuable for self-study students. It provides a good collection of quality questions, along with easily understandable and implementable theory. However, if you are attending coaching classes, you may not require the Cengage series, as you will have coaching notes covering the necessary material.
For specific topics, the following books are recommended:
- S.L. Looney for Trigonometry
- Hall & Knight for Higher Algebra
- G.N. Berman for Integration (highly recommended)
CHEMISTRY:
The books listed below are considered the best for JEE Main Chemistry and JEE Advanced Chemistry. Chemistry requires a deeper theoretical understanding compared to other subjects in the JEE syllabus, making books crucial for studying this subject. Ideally, chemistry is best learned through coaching classes, so it is advisable to obtain the recommended books used by your coaching institute.
For self-study individuals, it is suggested to consider popular books on the subject for theory. Although I am not aware of a specific book for Physical Chemistry theory, you can refer to P. Bahadur for practice problems. Additionally, I have mentioned a few more books below that are well-regarded, although I mostly relied on foreign author books and my coaching sheets. If you are studying on your own, you can also refer to the Cengage or Arihant series.
M.S. Chouhan Sir's book is highly regarded for JEE Organic Chemistry and is often considered sufficient to score nearly full marks in this subject. The book provides an ample amount of practice questions and covers each and every reaction in detail.
When it comes to theory, some students prefer foreign author books such as L.G. Wade, Morrison Boyd, and Paula Bruice. However, these books are not commonly recommended for JEE students as they contain content beyond the scope of JEE Main and Advanced. These books may include unnecessary reactions that could divert students from the JEE exam syllabus.
The best book for Chemistry, without a doubt, is our trusted NCERT (National Council of Educational Research and Training) textbook. It is a comprehensive resource that aligns perfectly with the JEE Main and Advanced syllabus. Studying and understanding the concepts from the NCERT book is essential for scoring well in Chemistry.
Believe me, all the toppers swear by the effectiveness of reading and memorizing the NCERT textbook, as questions are often asked directly from it in the JEE Main exam. The questions in JEE Main are often straight-forward and can be directly answered by referring to the NCERT book.
Certain topics have a higher probability of yielding marks with relatively less effort. These topics are known to consistently appear in JEE Main every year. By focusing on these topics and mastering them, you can increase your chances of scoring well in the exam.
Chemistry:
- Bio-molecules.
- Polymer.
- Surface chemistry.
- Chemistry in everyday life.
- Environmental chemistry( ppm concentration gives 1 question every time injEE Main).
PHYSICS:
- Magnetism & Matter.
- Electromagnetic Waves.
- Semiconductor.
- Surface Tension.
- Elasticity & Viscosity.
- Diffraction & Polarization.
- Communication system.
- Error and measurement.
Maths:
- Mathematical Reasoning.
- Set theory.
- Statistics.
- Height and Distance.
These simple tips will make you excel in coaching and IIT-JEE examination as well.

DeleteTo aim for a seat in the coveted IITs, NITs, IIITsand GFTIs, the first step would be to look at how to prepare for JEE Main. A clear study plan is the key to success in any exam especially JEE Main which happens to be the largest under graduate engineering exam in the country. Therefore the next step in answer to how to prepare for JEE Main 2021 would be the formulation of a good study plan that incorporates exam pattern, syllabus, mock tests, practice and more
